Yogurt pops, sunscreens, and the privilege

Issue 38 // JAM

Hi ,

What’s your favorite way to stay cool? All ideas welcome 😎☀️

Thanks Reader M for recommending cupcake holders (instead of cup covers) to catch ices drips. 💡

READERS RESPOND: How to deal with biting issues in a playgroup?

We got a massive amount of feedback. I consolidated it below. These are readers’ replies and not a reflection of JAM’s opinions.

The bottom line: biting is a serious issue because it puts the other children at risk – a child’s bite can be dangerous. To those in morah positions, please consult a rav and professional before taking action on any of the suggestions below. Thank you to everyone who chimed in!

The root cause

Prevention and punishment

  • A child who bites must then bite into a raw onion

  • Biting is grounds for getting hit on the lip

A Morah’s role

  • Biting grounds for suspension, as it endangers the other kids. It’s the parent’s responsibility to address

  • Must be stopped no matter what

  • Watch closely and step-in proactively, reward for not biting

  • Give attention to the hurt child first ("Oy, you got a boo boo and now you are so sad..."). Kindly but firmly reprimand the child who bit ("No biting! Biting is a booboo! Chaya is so sad!") and help them soothe the other child (apologize, make nice). Then, walk them through a better alternative to dealing with their frustration ("You really wanted the car? Let's use words - tell Chaya 'I want the car!'“)

JUST DESSERTS

I’m on a mission to elevate our shalosh seudos, the highest moments of Shabbos – our yichud room with Hashem – our “dessert.”

This week, some of us had delicious homemade ice cream pops (recipe below 🔽), and the ones who weren’t yet milchigs had chummus-basar and pastrami salad leftovers 😆

JUST FOR YOU

🍨REC: Make ice cream pops. Mix ½ cup plain Greek yogurt, ¼ cup peanut butter (I used natural, if you use smooth, consider adding some chopped peanuts), and 1 tablespoon honey (or maple syrup). Smooth into circles on a parchment-lined baking sheet and add popsicle sticks. (I combined all ingredients in a Ziploc and piped the circles.) Freeze for at least an hour. Melt ½ cup chocolate chips (I used dark) and dip each pop into the chocolate, use a spoon to get full coverage. Re-freeze and enjoy! 😋

🎁PRODUCT: Spending time at the pool? Check out these cool waterproof cards that are also less likely to fly away in the breeze. Happy playing!

☀️TIP: Stay protected (and comfortable). Sun protection is crucial – and some can’t stand sticky sunscreen. If that’s you, check out these products
