Freezer tips, Yom Kippur toys, and baby's naptime

Issue 47 // JAM

Hi ,

One thing I’ve learned from monitoring the JAM inbox: ask a bunch of women about Yom Tov cooking, and you’ll get an avalanche of replies.

And you might need to buy another one of these 😅

And, If you’re just scraping by and not even thinking about – let alone cooking – yom tov in advance… you’re SO not alone.

On a different note, if you’re running low on shirts that aren’t too stained for school (like us), this was the perfect, budget find to fill the gap! It can be at your door in the next few days, has soft material and a great fit (size up so it works next season).

Love hearing how you’ve used our tips and templates! →

Thanks T.Y. for the feedback!

With their best tips for this time of year:

  • Prep a selection of finger foods (chicken fingers, carrot muffins, deli roll, potato knishes, or even a cholent) to keep on the hotplate yom tov morning. Davening is long but local, and I tell my boys I'd rather they come home for a short break than hang around outside the shul.

  • Cholent makes the best Yom Kippur meal for young kids – make ahead, easy to serve!

  • For kids who are a little challenging in the classroom: tip the rebbe $25 monthly on RC instead of a big tip for Chanukah / Purim. It's a pleasant surprise when no one else is tipping and gives me more feel-good mileage all year round. Also nice chinuch for the kid to take it in.

    Thanks Reader N!

JUST IN TIME

The ultimate guide to yom tov freezer-stocking, from JAM readers to you. 😊

What can you make in advance?

Nearly everything! (Unless you’re a super-foodie like Reader L!)

Challah

Soups

Dips

Meats

Roasts in sauces, dry meats seasoned and frozen raw, pulled beef, meatballs

Chicken

Schnitzel, chicken on the bone, capons

Tip: in the weeks leading up to yom tov, double your Shabbos chicken main, and freeze a pan for a variety in the freezer for yom tov.

Tip: if you love your fresh schnitzel, freeze it breaded raw, with parchment paper between the layers so you can easily lift out a batch and cook fresh.

Sides

Kugels (potato, broccoli, butternut squash, lukshen, apple, zucchini), deli rolls, potato knishes, doughless potato knishes with pastrami, blintzes, stuffed peppers, applesauce

Simanim kugel/muffins – cabbage, zucchini, carrot.

Desserts

Ice creams, mousses, cakes, cookies, molten cakes, honey cake and cookies

Tip: Make all your baked goods in one go – they use most of the same ingredients and you might not even have to wash out the bowl between dishes.

Even if you can’t freeze a dish, you may be able to make some components in advance, like sauces (eg. mushroom, vegetable) and fried onions, to cut down on last min prep time.

Tip: Freeze components in Ziploc bags to save space, or even ice cube trays if you’ll ony use a small amount at time.

What’s the best way to freeze foods?

  • Wrap meat in silver foil or saran wrap and freeze the gravy/sauce separately

  • Label the fronts of pans in addition to the top so you see what’s in your freezer at-a-glance

  • Raw! Freeze food prepped and pop it in the oven to cut down and prep time and enjoy the delicious smells and fresh food

  • Use very airtight containers/Ziplocs

JUST FOR YOU

🚂 TIP: Get something new to keep your kids busy. A new toy can give you some much needed time to rest or daven this Yom Kippur - this one’s on a great sale.

If you prefer not to shop, swap 2-3 toys with a neighbor and pull them out when you need to!

💳 REC: Earn a bonus on your yom tov spend. If credit cards are the right way for you to shop, and you’re on the lookout for a new one looking for a new one, this is a great card with no annual fee and a $200 bonus (if you spend $500 in 3 months) at this link.

👠 HACK: Waterproof your shoes. Shoe shopping? Protect new shoes from the snow and rain with this (highly-recommended) waterproofing spray. (And then, take a deep breath and let the brand new, shiny shoes goooo.)
