"Okay?"

Issue 55 // JAM

Hi!

It’s getting so close to Chanuka and I’m feeling the warmth, celebration, and the joy of “nisecha sheb’chol yom imanu” seeping in and I love it. (It’s my favorite yom tov by far.)

(I would love to celebrate with you, what’s something fun we can do together?!)

🙏If you enjoy reading Just a Minute, can you share it with a friend or two?

JUST A THOUGHT (inspired by my very wise mother😊)

Kids aren’t supposed to be listening-machines, but this easy fix might make a big difference.

Sometimes, your kids might not listen because it’s not clear to them that they should.

Idk about you, but I (thanks Mommy for pointing it out) often end my instructions to my kid with “okay?”

○ “After you finish supper we’re taking baths, okay?”
○ “Go get your shoes and put them on, okay?”
○ “You’re done breakfast? So put your bowl in the garbage, okay?”

My intention (if I have one – this is totally a habit!) is to have them confirm that they heard me, but it often comes out as if I’m asking them if they agree.

If you do this too, I challenge you.

Stop saying okay and see if it makes it easier for your kids to follow through.

JUST FOR YOU

🧦PRODUCT: Get these great socks. Sometimes you just need basics. These are my favorite socks for little kids: soft and comfy, and they last more than a season.

🍗RECIPE: Make this Creamy Tuscan Chicken – it’s bursting with flavor and insanely delicious. I did not know a chicken-and-mashed-potatoes dinner could be so addictive. Make the chicken (original recipe here) so you can use the gravy over mashed potatoes, modified as we made it below:

4 (6-ounce) boneless skinless chicken breasts

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, or a mix of spices like oregano, thyme, basil, and rosemary

1 teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

¼ cup finely chopped yellow onion

4 garlic cloves, minced

A handful of roasted grape tomatoes

2 cups arugula

1 ½ cups oat milk

1.5 T nutritional yeast

Season the chicken with the spices, sear in olive oil for 3-4 mins each side and remove from the pan. In the same pan, add 1 T olive oil and saute the onions for 2-3 mins. Add tomatoes and garlic and saute for another minute. (Then inhaaaaale the scents. Yum!!!) Add the arugula (or spinach) saute until it starts to wilt. Add the “milk” and nutritional yeast, mix, and simmer. After a few mins, add the chicken back to the pan and allow it to cook for about 5 mins.

Enjoy! (Seriously, best supper I’ve ever had.)

MOTHERHOOD MUSING

🥹💗

BTW my four-year-old refused to go in the shower today because, “I’m way too busy just walking around.” Now, if that doesn’t make you feel incredibly productive… 💥

That’s all for today!💜
