🕎The Chanuka edition: games and miracles

Issue 56 // JAM

Hi!

Ahhhhh, Chanuka. Soak in the flickering lights, the lights in your life, and the opportunity for tefillah. 💞

(Make sure to check out the custom JAM illustrations at the end!)

🙏Tell me your favorite Chanuka game, activity, or moment so far. I’d love to hear!

JUST A Q

Reader S wants to know: What are good board games that work well for two people? Bonus if it's the type that sparks discussion, teamwork, or bonding. 😊 We like Wavelength.

My response: We love Codenames and word games, including Word Around (a fast-paced game), Fiction (a spin-off of Wordle that takes a ton more strategy, requires writing), and ofc Bananagrams! Some prices are super high now, wait til they drop.

Instead of totally getting rid of “okay?” at the end of instructions to your kids, it’s easier to replace it with, "did you hear me?" it - Reader C

JUST FOR YOU

🍩REC: Try these JAM Reader recommended Chanuka games.

A cute Chanuka game is to decorate mini donuts (from donut maker), decorate 2 of the same and play a memory game with it. Lay the donuts out on the table and cover them with coffee cups and each child gets a turn to pick up two and see if they found a match. Thank you Reader L!

My kids favorite dreidel game is

נ - Nosh (I prepare a pile in the center, and child gets to choose)

ג - Give a compliment to anyone in the room

ה - Hug anyone you choose

ש - Share from your nosh pile

(It’s mom’s favorite too, when you see the littles being so kind to each other! 🥰) Thank you Reader R!

In our bungalow colony, we’re a mature group of women who love a good night activity — especially the kind where you don’t have to leave your chair. You know the type.

This summer, we stumbled upon an absolute gem, and we were hooked. We used this trivia game at least ten times and now we want to share it with everyone.

What Makes It Amazing:

  • You do need internet to run the game on the screen.

  • But the brilliance is that your phone becomes the game controller —
and any phone works, even a fully kosher phone with no internet.

  • (Reply for the American call-in number, working on getting it for you!)

  • The website is in Hebrew, but just press “Translate to English” and it becomes simple, plus there’s a 24-hour chat if you need help.

  • (There’s a free demo you can try before Chanukah.) Once you purchase, you can prep your questions and play with the whole extended family on Chanukah.

The best part is, you can use any theme you want. Some favorites (after Chanuka-themed ofc!):

Family & Personal Trivia:

  • Guess the baby picture

  • Whose middle name / handwriting / funny quote / wedding hall / favorite food?

  • Which sibling did this as a kid?

Just-for-Fun:

  • Finish the song lyrics, name that sound, zoomed-in picture guessing, true or false, emoji riddles, “What happens next?” video questions
