Grab a pen, DIY labels, and never sort laundry again

Issue 78 // JAM

Hi!

What are you most looking forward to this summer? Long evenings, kids away at camp, daily ices? (Ices are my weakness. Soooo we eat a lot of them around here.)

Or do you feel like adulthood doesn’t come with the quintessential summer?

JUST ONE THING

JAM readers share one thing mothers today should know

My most helpful parenting tool is a piece of paper and a pencil/marker/crayon. I use it whenever I'm having trouble communicating with any child above age 3-4. (even if they don’t know how to read/write). Have them draw their feelings when they're upset, write a checklist of what they need to do, or write a list of options for them to choose from, and they check off their choices.

JUST FOR YOU

HACK: DIY your own labels — with packing tape! I went on an organizing spree but didn't have any labels at home. This worked so well, and my kids' shocked and excited reactions were priceless. Simply print your design or wording on a home printer (inkjet is what makes it work!), smooth packing tape over it, and rub firmly with a spoon. Then drop it in a bowl of water until the paper starts to peel away (~10–30 mins), remove the paper, and voila!

BONUS: This also makes a really run activity for the kids - they can choose their own designs, and DIY stickers!

🧁 TIP: Make muffins in a bag. Thanks Reader A! Mixing up baked goods recipes like muffins and bars in a bag — first combine wet ingredients, then add dry — saves you time and dishes. Plus, if you’re making muffins, the hack-on-hack is snip a small hole, pipe your batter into muffin tins (this one’s a JAM fave) and toss the bag! No cleanup! 🪄

🧺REC: (have your kids) presort your laundry. Sectional hampers mean that your kids can separate their laundry . Reader L recommended keeping two of these in every bedroom. I am loving this one for it’s beautiful look and practical removable inserts— and not having to separate before throwing in a load saves a ton of time!
